CHICAGO – Attorney General Kwame Raoul today issued the following statement celebrating the Supreme Court’s decision that blocks an unlawful rule that would have authorized the U.S. Postal Service to reject mail-in ballots.
“The court’s decision is a victory for voters, for democracy and for the rule of law in this country. I am pleased that the Supreme Court affirmed the lower courts’ decisions to stop this un-American rule from taking effect and creating chaos before the midterm election. I would like to thank my fellow attorneys general for their collective work in securing this result. The courts have recognized that states do not have the time to completely overhaul their mail-in ballot procedures to comply with a Postal Service rule that is unlawful in the first place. If allowed to go into effect, this rule would have created chaos and undermined confidence in our upcoming general election.

Raoul and a coalition of attorneys general filed a lawsuit challenging the rule earlier this month. Recently, Attorney General Raoul launched an election resource hub on his office’s website to help educate voters on their rights. The hub will be updated as needed, and more information will be added as the general election nears.
