Eli Z. Steele-Moss, 34, of East Alton, was charged on June 11, 2026 with his second or subsequent count of domestic battery, a Class 4 felony.

Steele-Moss allegedly knowingly caused bodily harm to a household or family member on the same date after previously being convicted of domestic battery in 2014, also in Madison County.

At the time of this latest offense, Steele-Moss was out on pretrial release from two prior felony cases filed earlier this year, according to the state’s petition to deny his pretrial release from custody.

Deputies with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office “responded to a dropped 911 call” before the petition states they made contact with the victim, who reported being battered by Steele-Moss while inside the victim’s vehicle. Deputies also reportedly “observed injuries to the victim’s face and arm.”

“Victim report[ed] that defendant then grabbed her keys and threw them out of the vehicle,” the petition states. “He then proceeded to walk away.”

While deputies were initially unable to locate Steele-Moss, Madison County Sheriff’s Office records show he was booked into the Madison County Jail on June 20, 2026 and currently remains in custody.

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
