By afternoon, the day reaches a high near 75 with breezy west-southwest winds around 14 mph and gusts up to 25 mph. Rain chances stay high, around 88 percent, with thunderstorms remaining possible. A stronger storm could bring localized damaging wind gusts, and heavy rain may cause brief flooding in trouble spots.

During the evening, showers and thunderstorms remain in the area, especially early, as temperatures slide out of the 70s. Clouds stick around, and the wet pattern will keep things unsettled through sunset.

Overnight, rain and thunder chances gradually ease but do not fully disappear. North winds settle near 8 mph, and temperatures fall to a low around 55 by daybreak.

A Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. for parts of the region, including nearby portions of southwest Illinois and eastern Missouri. The main concern is flash flooding from repeated rounds of rain.

The allergy index is mixed today. Tree pollen is very high, while grass, mold and ragweed levels are low.

Wednesday looks quieter, with a high near 69 and a low around 53. Expect partly sunny skies, lower humidity and just a small chance of a leftover shower.
