The U.S. National Weather Service Saint Louis Missouri announced on the afternoon of Feb. 17 that any fire started north of I-70 could experience “erratic fire behavior” due to a combination of low humidity and gusty southwest winds, especially in dry grassy areas and agricultural fields with dry crop debris.
According to a map provided with the National Weather Service announcement, the entirety of Jersey County lies within the Elevated Fire Danger area.
Fire Chief Keith Norman announced a local burn ban would be put in place at the Feb. 17 Jerseyville City Council meeting.
“They’re issuing a Red Flag Warning, which triggers a burn ban for us from sunrise to sundown,” Norman said of the National Weather Service. “Everything gets really dry and in the wind, things can spread quickly.”
Jerseyville officials sent out a city-wide TextMyGov alert on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 18 notifying residents of the burn ban and advising them not to burn in any area of Jersey County while the ban remains in effect.
