“Our Constitution requires the American people, through their elected representatives in Congress, to authorize any President to engage in acts of war because it is the American people—not a single man—who will be forced to live with the consequences of those decisions. It is simply unacceptable that Donald Trump continues ignoring that Constitutional requirement.

“While Donald Trump may never understand that the true costs of war are measured not only in dollars and cents, but in the blood, sweat and sacrifices of our troops and our military families, our servicemembers know all too well just how costly it can be when our nation engages in a war for oil without a plan for what comes next.

“We owe it to our troops, our military families and to all of the American people to fully consider those costs before engaging in war, and I am proud to sponsor this important resolution to ensure they can have their voices heard before Trump marches us even closer to another reckless forever war.”

The full text of the resolution is available on Senator Duckworth’s website.

Last November, Duckworth went to the Senate floor to excoriate Trump for launching his unlawful military campaign against Venezuela, further endangering our servicemembers and our country in the process without Congressional approval. She then voted in favor of Kaine’s (D-VA) resolution to block the Trump Administration from continuing to illegally use military force within or against Venezuela.
